We use symmetry considerations to investigate how damped modes affect pattern selection in multi-frequency forced Faraday waves. We classify and tabulate the most important damped modes and determine how the corresponding resonant triad interactions depend on the forcing parameters. The relative phase of the forcing terms may be used to enhance or suppress the nonlinear interactions. We compare our predictions with numerical results and discuss their implications for recent experiments. Our...

We construct an individual-based kinematic model of rolling migratory locust swarms. The model incorporates social interactions, gravity, wind, and the effect of the impenetrable boundary formed by the ground. We study the model using numerical simulations and tools from statistical mechanics, namely the notion of H-stability. For a free-space swarm (no wind and gravity), as the number of locusts increases, it approaches a crystalline lattice of fixed density if it is H-stable, and in contrast...

This article is from PLoS ONE , volume 8 . Abstract From bird flocks to fish schools and ungulate herds to insect swarms, social biological aggregations are found across the natural world. An ongoing challenge in the mathematical modeling of aggregations is to strengthen the connection between models and biological data by quantifying the rules that individuals follow. We model aggregation of the pea aphid, Acyrthosiphon pisum. Specifically, we conduct experiments to track the motion of aphids...

We study gender representation on the editorial boards of 435 journals in the mathematical sciences. Women are known to comprise approximately 15% of tenure-stream faculty positions in doctoral-granting mathematical sciences departments in the United States. Compared to this pool, the likely source of journal editorships, we find that 8.9% of the 13067 editorships in our study are held by women. We describe group variations within the editorships by identifying specific journals, subfields,...

In this paper we use the Merkurjev-Suslin theorem to explore the structure of arithmetically significant Galois modules that arise from Kummer theory. Let K be a field of characteristic different from a prime \ell, n a positive integer, and suppose that K contains the (\ell^n)^th roots of unity. Let L be the maximal \Z/\ell^n-elementary abelian extension of K, and set G = \Gal(L|K). We consider the G-module J = L^\times/\ell^n and denote its socle series by J_m. We provide a precise condition,...

In this paper, we develop the main step in the global theory for the mod-$\ell$ analogue of Bogomolov's program in birational anabelian geometry for higher-dimensional function fields over algebraically closed fields. More precisely, we show how to reconstruct a function field $K$ of transcendence degree $\geq 5$ over an algebraically closed field, up-to inseparable extensions, from the mod-$\ell$ abelian-by-central Galois group of $K$ endowed with the collection of mod-$\ell$ rational...
